Hybrid Blu-ray/HD DVD player coming, format war to continue

Korean consumer electronics giant LG has decided to go ahead and manufacture a hybrid player capable of playing both Blu-ray and HD DVD discs. This follows months of indecision, where LG committed to building a hybrid player and subsequently changed its mind.
LG will likely be the first to market with a hybrid player, as Samsung, the only other consumer electronics manufacturer to openly consider a hybrid player, has decided to take a wait-and-see approach. Samsung will only ship a hybrid player if HD DVD turns out to be as popular as Blu-ray.
Companies heavily invested in the next-generation optical format hope that the presence of dual-format discs and players capable of playing both HD DVD and Blu-ray discs will spur adoption of the new technology by consumers. But does this mean that it's "game over" when it comes to battle between Blu-ray and HD DVD that has only just begun?
Hybrid players such as LG's may help with a small segment of undecided buyers, but the majority of consumers will sit on the sidelines for the next few years. Prices on the new players are high, and the hybrid players are expected to be even more costly, which is another factor in Samsung's decision to play wait-and-see with its own hybrid player.
The biggest factor is that the majority of people just aren't early adopters. Keep in mind that it was only in the third quarter of 2006 that DVD player ownership overtook VCR ownership for the first time—a decade after the first DVD players were introduced. The end result will still be Blu-ray and HD DVD battling it out on the bleeding edge with the small number of early adopters while everybody else is content to sit home and watch old school DVDs.
LG's new hybrid player—which will be able to play Warner Brothers' hybrid discs—will be on display at next week's Consumer Electronics Show, and we'll stop by their booth to have a look at it.

Blu-ray Disc

Blu-ray, also known as Blu-ray Disc (BD), is the name of a next-generation optical disc format jointly developed by the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA), a group of the world's leading consumer electronics, personal computer and media manufacturers (including Apple, Dell, Hitachi, HP, JVC, LG, Mitsubishi, Panasonic, Pioneer, Philips, Samsung, Sharp, Sony, TDK and Thomson). The format was developed to enable recording, rewriting and playback of high-definition video (HD), as well as storing large amounts of data. The format offers more than five times the storage capacity of traditional DVDs and can hold up to 25GB on a single-layer disc and 50GB on a dual-layer disc. This extra capacity combined with the use of advanced video and audio codecs will offer consumers an unprecedented HD experience.

While current optical disc technologies such as DVD, DVD±R, DVD±RW, and DVD-RAM rely on a red laser to read and write data, the new format uses a blue-violet laser instead, hence the name Blu-ray. Despite the different type of lasers used, Blu-ray products can easily be made backwards compatible with CDs and DVDs through the use of a BD/DVD/CD compatible optical pickup unit. The benefit of using a blue-violet laser (405nm) is that it has a shorter wavelength than a red laser (650nm), which makes it possible to focus the laser spot with even greater precision. This allows data to be packed more tightly and stored in less space, so it's possible to fit more data on the disc even though it's the same size as a CD/DVD. This together with the change of numerical aperture to 0.85 is what enables Blu-ray Discs to hold 25GB/50GB.

Blu-ray is currently supported by more than 180 of the world's leading consumer electronics, personal computer, recording media, video game and music companies. The format also has broad support from the major movie studios as a successor to today's DVD format. In fact, seven of the eight major movie studios (Disney, Fox, Warner, Paramount, Sony, Lionsgate and MGM) are supporting the Blu-ray format and five of them (Disney, Fox, Sony, Lionsgate and MGM) are releasing their movies exclusively in the Blu-ray format. Many studios have also announced that they will begin releasing new feature films on Blu-ray Disc day-and-date with DVD, as well as a continuous slate of catalog titles every month. Verbatim to Launch World’s First Mini DVD-R DL Media

erbatim® Corporation, a first-tier media producer known for developing advanced DVD and Dual Layer technologies, announced today the world’s first Mini DVD-R Dual Layer (DL) disc. Measuring only three inches (8cm) in diameter, the new discs provide nearly a full hour of continuous video capture time or 2.6GB of storage capacity on a single side. Verbatim Mini DVD-R DL media will be available at the end of August 2006 in North America, where the new Canon DC22 Mini DVD-R DL-compatible camcorder will be launched. Shipments to other parts of the world will begin when the new Mini DVD-R DL-compatible camcorders become available locally.

Featuring two recording layers on a single side, Verbatim’s new Mini DVD-R DL discs provide almost twice the capacity of current mini DVD-R discs. Fully compatible with the DVD-R DL specification approved by the DVD Forum, the media can be recorded with compatible camcorders and played back with the majority of DVD players. It is ideal for applications such as recording and sharing home movies, sporting events, training videos and business presentations as well as digital audio, photos and graphics.

For added protection against the scratches and abrasion that can occur during normal camcorder and home use, the Mini DVD-R DL media features Verbatim’s innovative VideoGard™ technology. The VideoGard protective coating on the disc surface makes irreplaceable home videos and photos 40 times more resistant to damage.

The combination of Verbatim’s premium-quality media with VideoGard? protection provides users with the assurance that they have the best media on the market for storing, viewing and sharing their special memories and that they’ll be able to enjoy them for years to come.

“Our new Mini DVD-R Dual Layer discs deliver the convenience of longer recording times that camcorder users want without the drawbacks of double-sided DVD media,” said Tim Clatterbuck, Verbatim Optical Storage Manager. “Now, they can record for up to 54 minutes* continuously without having to flip the disc. That means they won’t miss important video shots when flipping the disc or waste recording capacity by removing the disc early in order to prepare the next video capture. In addition,” Clatterbuck noted, “unlike the double-sided media, which doesn’t have any space for writing titles, they can utilize the label area to identify their videos.”

Verbatim and its parent company, Mitsubishi® Kagaku Media (MKM), worldwide market leaders in recordable and rewriteable CD and DVD media, have consistently been first to bring DL technology developments to market.
